Resilience.

On Wednesday of this week I had the pleasure of speaking about Resilience to the Fund Raising Team at Missing People Charity. It was their team Innovation Day and I was so excited to be a part of it. I thought I would share the 5 main pillars of resilience and how NLP can help you build resilience.

So Resilience - what is it?

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity, it’s how we adapt to change, how we grow through life’s inevitable ups and downs.  It’s a skill that can be developed and refined, much like the principles of NLP.  So here are the 5 main pillars of Resilience:-

  1. Energy - this one is all about sustaining and renewing physical energy. It’s about taking time out to look after yourself (going to the gym, going for a walk, meeting a friend) by doing this you are actively taking responsibility for your own physical health and wellbeing so that you are ready to take on anything that comes your way.  Think of your car it needs fuel to move, to get off the driveway. Humans need energy to get up out of bed, get to work, take our kids to school and Self-care is our way of fueling as well as eating well of course.

  2. Future Focus (this is your road map - the what!) - It‘s so much easier to feel resilient when you have a sense of purpose and direction don’t you think? If you have been feeling stuck or have had a problem, future looking can help you to find a new direction and help you to take the necessary steps towards it.

  3. Inner Drive (your motivation, this is your ‘why’) - Sometimes, even when you are clear about what you want, you might not believe that you can get there.  Inner drive is about your self-belief, confidence and motivation.  It is so much easier to keep going through challenging and difficult times when we are feeling confident in ourselves and confident in our abilities. If you can get clarity around your ‘why’ it will be like somebody turning a switch on inside of you.

  4. Flexible thinking (adapting and flexing!)  If you have ever found yourself in problem mode you can’t get a sense of what your options are, you can’t see the wood for the trees, and you become in a stuck state.  When you are more flexible and have flexible thinking this allows you to think outside the box and identify new possibilities and new ideas for yourself, your business, your goals. NLP is all about being flexible, because life isn’t always straight forward and it can change at the flip of a coin. Being flexible will be so super valuable to you.

  5. Strong relationships (our community, our family, our friends) - When we think of resilient people, we think of strong independent people forging through life on their own, not needing any help, but actually research has shown that the most resilient people have great relationships, they feel empathy towards others and are not too proud to share their problems. Great relationships at work and at home can all help towards being more open in relationships which leads to being seen as more trustworthy and honest and more willing to share and halve more problems with each other.

How you take care of your own wellbeing is totally up to you, it’s individual and everyone's journey is totally different.  Understanding and developing these 5 pillars as above can really help you become more resilient just think what you could achieve if you were more energetic, purposeful, confident, flexible, and connected!
